PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT14101 S. Halsted708-841-2202 Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PMJerry Townsend, DirectorThe Riverdale Public Works Department is responsible for streets, alleys, water, sewer, tree trimming, refuse, lighting, and general maintenance of all Village property. Working together, we can be proud of the way our Village looks and keep Riverdale “The best little village in Illinois.”
Water Supply Riverdale purchases water from Chicago and stores it in three reservoirs located throughout the village. Employees who check on your water supply are certified water operators. Water meters measure the water entering your home or business. Water leaks cost all users. Repair any drips and leaks you may have and save!
Sewer All sanitary sewers in the village are tied to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District where the discharge is treated before being released into the waterways. Since the 1980’s storm water runoff is not permitted to be routed into the general sewer system. Storm sewers take this runoff to a lift station along the Little Calumet River.
Roadways There are approximately 25 miles of streets in the Village. Public Works is responsible for patching, scheduling resurfacing, plowing and sweeping these roadways. Additionally, there are county and state routes which run through the Village. 138th Street and Indiana Avenue are two examples of County owned roadways, and Halsted Street is State Route l. Maintenance of these roads are state and county responsibility.
Lighting Street lights on metal poles are the property of and maintained by the Village of Riverdale. Those lights on wood poles are owned and maintained by ComEd. Please report all problems with lighting to Public Works. (841-2202)
April 15 - October 31 Street Sweeping Schedule Signs are posted on each block and streets are swept per the following schedule:
Refuse Refuse collection is contracted to Tri-State Disposal, 13903 Ashland. Please do not put trash out before 6 PM of the previous day. All refuse must be in the container provided by the Village of Riverdale and you may place up to three additional large items out per week. There is a minimum of $200.00 fine imposed for improper trash disposal.
Recycling All residents are encouraged to recycle paper, metal, glass and plastic containers. A blue recycling bin has been provided to each residence and all recyclables need to be in the blue bin and set out next to your regular refuse container on each trash day.
Yard Waste During the months of April to November, yard waste will be picked up on your regular collection day. Be sure to place all grass, branches, leaves in BIODEGRADABLE bags, or a special container marked YARD WASTE, and set out next to your trash. YARD WASTE IN PLASTIC BAGS WILL NOT BE PICKED UP. Be sure to keep your alleyway neat and clean as it is your responsibility. Remember - you have the responsibility for keeping your property clean!
Snow Removal Snow is removed from the main streets first east to west. North-south streets are next. Your assistance is needed to help clear fire hydrants and stop signs during periods of heavy snow. If you live on a “Snow Route” your vehicle will be towed after two inches of snowfall.
Senior Bus Service The “Spirit of Riverdale” bus operates throughout the village on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Check Village Hall for scheduling or call 841-2202 for more information. Free bus passes are available at Village Hall to anyone over the age of 62.
